Created in December 1997, Calitom (Charente association for the valorisation of household waste) covers 390 communes, representing some 240 000 inhabitants. The association is in charge of providing a public facility which includes :
- separate collection; sorting waste for recycling
- backyard composting
- waste collection and management of landfild sites
- creating and running a network material recovery facility
